Queer Pedagogies workshop, 30-31 May 2022
This workshop is organized by the queer and feminist studies working group and its aim is to create a space where practitioners, academics and activists from across Europe and beyond gather to discuss various themes related to queer pedagogies.
Promoting the acceptance of sexual and gender diversity in education is increasingly under attack across Europe and beyond. Queer-feminist activists, the proponents of gender studies as well as queer-friendly youth and educational organisations face fierce opposition from right-wing extremists, religious fundamentalists and other groups with conservative agendas.
Given these challenging circumstances, we want to create a space where practitioners, academics and activists from across Europe and beyond gather to discuss, without too much clamour, various themes related to queer pedagogies. By this we mean in the broadest sense the queer transfer of knowledge and the transfer of queer knowledge, whether it occurs in formal educational settings, in subcultural spaces, in online environments or within families, chosen or otherwise.
Over two days people from different career stages and backgrounds will present their work and thoughts in panels on queer youth and teacher activism, on everyday queer pedagogies, on the queerriculum and on challenging educational systems. In addition there will be keynotes by Michela Balocchi and Stephan Mills from the Intersexioni Collective and by Ahmed Ragab from the Centre for Black, Brown, and Queer Studies. The event will close with a conversation between Gracia Trujillo, a scholar and activist teaching queer pedagogies in Spain, Dominik Kuc who did a ranking of LGBTQ-friendly schools in Poland, and David Gasparjan, who is involved in public queer history projects in Germany. What are different approaches to and the transnational possibilities of queer pedagogies?
