Making LGBTQ+ memories and histories. A dialogue with the activists
WHEN: 8 April 2022, 16:00 – 18:00 CET
WHERE: Scuola Normale Superiore, Sala l’Altana, Palazzo Strozzi, Piazza Strozzi, Firenze
As part of the first LGBT+ History Month Italia, the EUI Queer and Feminist Studies Working Group and the Scuola Normale Superiore organise a public event in the city of Florence entitled “Memorie e storie collettive LGBTQ+. Un dialogo con lз militantз (LGBTQ+ memories and histories. A dialogue with the activists)”, in cooperation with the two local LGBTQ+ associations, IREOS and Azione Gay e Lesbica.
The making of LGBTQ+ histories and memories involves a variety of actors and experiences in a steady and lively dialogue. Historical chronologies and memories’ narratives appear many times as the result of definition, selection, and promotion processes, not free of tensions and breaks.
The public discussion aims to inspect some of the dynamics included in the building processes of LGBTQ+ histories and memories in Italy through a dialogue with three activists (with different gender, biographies, and political experiences) which have been having a crucial role in the Italian LGBTQ+ political and cultural life since the 1970s in different organizations and territories.
The panel will be composed by three researchers from the European University Institute and the Scuola Normale Superiore (Riccardo Bulgarelli, Irina Aguiari, Anna Lavizzari), two representants of the local LGBTQ+ associations Azione Gay e Lesbica and IREOS and three activists, Angelo Pezzana (together with Maurizio Gelatti, co-president of the Fondazione Sandro Penna/FUORI! of Turin), Porpora Marcasciano, and Nerina Milletti.
Activists’ profiles:
Angelo Pezzana was one of the leaders of the Fronte Unitario Omosessuale Rivoluzionario Italiano (FUORI!), founded in 1971, in which he was active throughout the 1970s. He has founded the Fondazione Sandro Penna/FUORI! that from the early 1980s has promoted the LGBTQ+ history and culture with books, events and publications.
Nerina Milletti has participated in the women’s movement and in lesbian groups since the second half of the 1970s. She has been working on the lesbian history since the 1990s, creating an online repository of historical materials and writing a variety of essays and books on lesbian and gender history.
Porpora Marcasciano was active in the NARCISO (Nuclei Armati Rivoluzionari Comunisti Internazionali Sovversivi Omosessuali) since the mid-1970s and in 1979 she contributed to the foundation of the Movimento Identità Trans (MIT) she chaired between 2010 and 2016. She is the author of many works on transgender history and of several autobiographies. She is now part of the city council of Bologna.
The event will be held in Italian.
